Salesforce Adds Ocean Protection to Policy Priorities
CRM solutions provider Salesforce announced today the addition of ocean protection policy priorities to serve as a basis for its advocacy and policy engagement in supporting meaningful action to protect oceans from the impacts of climate change, and for the reduction of global emissions through ocean-based solutions.
Salesforce’s works with lawmakers and regulators around the globe through its public policy platform to support policies that positively impact the company’s employees, customers, communities, and business. The company announced last year the addition of climate priorities to the platform. The new ocean policy priorities will be included within the climate policy principles.
Under the new ocean-climate priorities, Salesforce will advocate for policies, regulations, actions and investments in three key categories:
- Protect and restore marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Priorities in this category include to conserve 30% of oceans by 2030 and sustainably manage 100% of the ocean for mitigating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and safeguarding human wellbeing, protect, restore and invest in coastal ecosystems, defend communities against rising seas and storms, and advance market-based solutions such as blue carbon markets, sustainable tourism, and sustainable fisheries.
- Avoid and reduce plastic pollution. Salesforce will support policies, regulations and innovation aimed at keeping plastics out of the environment and in a circular economy, such as improved plastic waste management infrastructure, innovations in product design, packaging, and the plastics value chain, and scaling up cost effective environmental cleanups.
- Avoid and reduce large-scale emissions. Policies in this category include those accelerating the transition to net zero through ocean-based solutions, including zero-emissions shipping and the responsible deployment of offshore wind energy.
The new policy priorities follow the launch by Salesforce earlier this year of a new ‘blue carbon’ markets initiative, aimed at helping to scale sustainable ocean-based carbon markets through the development of consistent standards for assessing projects and credits.
Salesforce’s ocean-based announcements are the latest in a series of sustainability-focused initiatives by the company. In May, Salesforce announced a $100 million commitment to support technologies that remove carbon from the atmosphere, as part of the First Movers Coalition (FMC). Earlier this year the company announced the addition of Sustainability as a “Core Company Value.” Salesforce has also announced that it will introduce climate obligations in its supplier procurement contracts, and that it will begin integrating ESG performance in its executive compensation programs.
In a post announcing the company’s new policy priorities, Whitney Johnston, Director of Ocean Sustainability at Salesforce, said:
“It is our hope that Salesforce’s commitment and engagement on ocean and climate issues will inspire others to take action, including individuals, our corporate peers, and decision makers.”
