Meta Signs 595 MW Renewable Energy Deals in Texas
Meta announced that it has signed four environmental attribute purchase agreements (EAPAs) with Madrid-based Zelestra for production of 595 MW of renewable energy to help power the company’s data centers in Texas.
Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has set a target to reach net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030, and is one of the largest corporate buyers of renewable energy. The company achieved its goal to meet 100% of its operational energy needs with renewable sources in 2020, and recently said that it anticipates adding 9.8 GW of renewable energy to local grids in the U.S. through its supported wind and solar projects by 2025.
The agreement marks the latest in a series of Texas-based clean energy deals for the company. Earlier this year, Meta signed an EAPA with Engie North America, part of the France-based Engie Group, to supply the social media company with 200 MW of renewable energy and associated environmental attributes from Engies’ Anson 2 solar project in Jones County, Texas, which followed a 260 MW deal announced in November for renewable energy from Engie’s Sypert Branch solar project in Milam County, Texas.
Urvi Parekh, Head of Global Energy at Meta, said:
“We are excited to announce these solar projects with Zelestra. The renewable energy from these projects will support our data center operations, as well as our ongoing efforts to match our electricity usage with 100% clean and renewable energy.”
The agreements will enable Zelestra to build four solar projects, delivering 595 megawatts of electricity into the Texas ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) grid. The projects are located in Hopkins, Lamar, Lampasas, and Henderson Counties.
The new agreements bring the total number of EAPAs signed between Meta and Zelestra to six, with Zelestra supplying Meta with a total of 800 megawatts of power. In April 2024, the two companies signed agreements for 210 megawatts to be produced by two Zelestra solar plants in Indiana.
Zelestra develops, builds, commercializes, and operates large-scale renewable energy projects, and has a portfolio of 28 GW carbon-free projects across 13 countries. It utilizes a variety of renewable and environmentally-friendly technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, BESS (Battery energy storage systems) and H2 hydrogen. The company currently has 6.6 GWdc (gigawatts direct current) of renewable projects under development in several US states.
Phillip North, CEO of Zelestra US, said:
“We are pleased to triple the size of our partnership with Meta, demonstrating that we share the same commitment to accelerate decarbonization. The agreement is a major boost to our wider ambition of doubling our total contracted renewables portfolio across the US in the next two years.”
